Be Still and Know
Free verse poem written as a response to Psalm 46
My soul is far from Still:
it roils and twists like an anxious sea,
whipped to froth and frenzy by my fears.
I make mountains out of molehills;
my thoughts spiral like river eddies
in the currents of events.
Oh, that you would take these mountains I have made
and cast them into the heart of the sea,
then Speak and bid my anxious sea be Still;
oh, calm the tumult in my ocean depths!
When the roar of the storm deafens me,
give me ears that I might hear
your Still, small voice
and, in hearing it,
Know peace.
